Wadi Rum:
Off the Beaten Track

A multi-day camel trekking journey through the remote landscapes of Wadi Rum.
4 days | Experienced riders | Jordan | Sleep under the stars

Wadi Rum is a vast desert valley in southern Jordan, known for its dramatic sandstone landscapes and deep-rooted Bedouin culture. For centuries, nomadic tribes have lived, travelled, and traded across this terrain, shaping a way of life intrinsically connected to the desert.

This journey offers more than a trek. It is an opportunity to experience Wadi Rum as it has been known for generations, moving slowly through the land by camel, guided by those whose lives are woven into it.

We partner with a family-run Bedouin operator who leads these journeys with care, cultural respect, and a strong commitment to preserving the authenticity of Wadi Rum.

The Journey

This multi-day trek follows a south loop through some of the most remote areas of Wadi Rum, travelling at the natural pace of the camels. Days are spent crossing open desert, narrow wadis, and sandstone corridors, while nights are spent camping far from established tourist routes.

Life on the trek is simple and immersive. Evenings are shared around the fire, meals are prepared together, and stories are exchanged beneath a sky filled with stars. The journey offers space to disconnect from routine and reconnect with landscape, rhythm, and tradition.

Who This Trek is For

This experience is suited to travellers seeking a deeper, more immersive desert journey.

  • Adventurous travellers comfortable with extended time outdoors
  • Those interested in Bedouin culture, heritage, and slow travel
  • Guests seeking remote landscapes and minimal infrastructure

This trek is not designed as a luxury experience. It is intentionally raw, remote, and grounded in traditional desert travel.

Route

The route follows a south loop through Wadi Rum, covering remote desert corridors, narrow wadis, and vast open plains over several days. The journey moves away from established tourist routes, allowing riders to experience the desert at its most raw and expansive.

Along the way, landscapes shift constantly, from towering sandstone formations and wide sandy valleys to hidden canyons shaped by wind and time. Each day brings a new rhythm and terrain, revealing the scale and diversity of Wadi Rum.

This journey requires endurance and a willingness to embrace long days outdoors. Riders should expect extended hours in the saddle, followed by evenings spent in simple desert camps, reflecting the traditional pace and practicality of Bedouin life.

Far from roads and infrastructure, the route offers a rare sense of isolation and perspective. It is an opportunity to move through a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

More Than Camels

This journey is guided by Ayesh and members of his family, whose lives are deeply connected to Wadi Rum. Their knowledge of the land, seasons, routes, and desert survival has been passed down through generations.

More than a trek, this is a cultural immersion. From shared meals prepared over the fire to stories exchanged under the stars, riders are welcomed into the everyday rhythms of Bedouin desert life.

The experience offers a respectful and authentic insight into Bedouin culture, revealing not only the practical skills required to live in the desert, but also the values, traditions, and relationships that sustain it.

Travelling by camel allows guests to engage with the landscape in a way that is slow, intentional, and deeply connected to the land and its people.

Camels

Camels are an integral part of Bedouin culture in Wadi Rum and have been used for transportation and trade in the region for centuries. Ayesh’s camels are well cared for, experienced, and ideally suited to long desert journeys.

Traditional riding gear is used, including a thick saddle blanket placed over the camel’s hump and a sturdy wooden-framed saddle designed to distribute the rider’s weight evenly and provide a stable, comfortable seat.

In true Jordanian style, riders sit behind the hump, crossing their legs over the camel’s neck.

Accommodation

One night is spent in typical semi-permanent desert tents equipped with electricity and low single beds.

The remaining two nights are spent camping in remote wadis, far from tourist camps. Mattresses and blankets are provided, allowing guests to sleep under the open sky. Water is supplied for drinking and basic washing.

There are no fixed bathrooms or electricity in remote camps. Toilet etiquette will be explained and must be followed to help preserve the desert environment.

Guests are encouraged to plan device charging in advance or embrace the opportunity to fully disconnect.

Location

Itinerary

You’ll arrive with an early morning flight to Amman Airport. We recommend the FlyDubai FZ147 itinerary. Meet Jana, your ADCRC rep for the trip at the airport. (she will not be on the second departure).

We will head towards the South and towards Wadi Rum straight away which is a 5 hour journey.

Lunch is planned at MAzayen, a traditional restaurant for authentic Jordanian lunch. It also gives us the chance to get some souvenirs or a head scarf.

This is also the last stop for internet connection.

In the Wadi Rum Village, we will visit the Women’s Crafts Workshop, have a little 4×4 sand tour and stop at one of the iconic rock formations for sunset. This will be the last chance for phone reception at all.

The first dinner and night will be spent in the camp near Wadi Rum Visitor Center

In the morning, we will finally meet the camels. The first section is going to be a walk, as it helps camel and rider to get accustomed to one another.

Be prepared for a good 30 kms ride towards the south, deeper into the Wadi towards the Saudi border.

The night will be spent in a camp with no tents, around the fire and under the stars.

Rise early, and warm yourself with a hot cup of tea.

Breakfast is prepared at camp, before saddling the camels and traveling for another 35kms to our last camping location.

Return to the Wadi Rum Village, the shortest riding day (15km), to complete a total distance of around 80km over the 3 days .

We will reach the Camp before noon to refresh, before being transferred back to Wadi Rum Village by car. We will have lunch there before heading back to Amman to catch the flight.
